about

Opposite my mum's house in Nottingham growing up, there was one part of a primary school - it was the school's field. It sounds weird, but the school down the road in another part of town didn't have a sports field on site and so bizarrely, they had a field - along with a small building that had a singular classroom - in an entirely different location. Our window faced out on to it, and the kids would be marched the ten minute journey there or back at points throughout the day. At lunchtime during spring and summer that field would be filled with kids laughing, mucking around and playing football but most of the day and a lot of the year it was just a big empty, locked field (something which would piss me off as a teenager with a dog to walk and loitering to do).

I'm pretty sure I started writing this song in my mum's living room when I was visiting a couple of years ago before she moved - but either way I'm back at her house in my mind's eye every time I play it, feeling a certain kind of displaced. This song to me is like being physically in a safe warm place whilst mentally being out in the cold in a vast empty field, somewhere big and lonely that's just a stones throw away from home.

lyrics

Here I am just doing what ought to be done
I'll try, I'll play, repeat, rerun
Blue is still blue and green is still green
This beautiful life waits to take me back to where I have been

Here I wait to feel what ought to be felt
Maybe I'm weak, maybe these are just cards I was dealt
Or maybe I am just the sum of all of my failures to date
I went too far, I let them down, I got there late

I'm out here drenched to the bone
Everything fell from the clouds in my sky
Tonight as I stood alone
On the wrong side of our double glazed window

Take me by the hand and lead me home
No-one knows I'm lost out here alone
I know you'd be here if you knew
You'd get me out of these rain soaked clothes
And lead me back to blue
Back to blue

Here I lie, oh holy beam cut through
I brought it all down and I painted the pieces of you
A small vial of stomach bile, a putrid and gruesome bruise
I'm picking the cracks, I'm trying to get back to blue

Bare myself to the tide, I roar 'til I'm hoarse
I want to be your angry sea dancing with the wind
And I can feel your violent breeze I can hear you sing
They said it would change me but I don't feel anything

I'm out here drenched to the bone
Everything fell from the clouds in my sky
Tonight as I stood alone
On the wrong side of our double glazed window

Take me by the hand and lead me home
No-one knows I'm lost out here alone
I know you'd be here if you knew
You'd get me out of these rain soaked clothes
And lead me back to blue
Back to blue
