about

My brother, sisters and I were lucky enough to grow up on Henry Road, a leafy suburban street in West Bridgford, Nottingham. We moved in when I was three, and my Dad still lives there with his wife, although they're planning to move out soon. I started this song a few years ago; I'd gone back there to stay, a little drunk, after an evening out in Notts with school friends. I ended up wandering around the house, thinking about the significance of places - how they can change with the people who inhibit them, how the way we see them can say more about what's going on inside us than anything else and how we can rally against them when really we're fighting ourselves. I remember an irrational hatred of my new bedroom at my mom's when my parents broke up in my teens, after feeling alarmingly fine about everything else. I thought I didn't care about what else was going on, but I fucking hated that room! (spoiler: it wasn't about the room..)

Anyway a friend always says it's funny how we talk about our childhood home like it's a person. I guess it is. This one's for you, Henry.

lyrics

Henry
changing in spite of me
Shedding your skin of me
I’m all over the floor

Henry
it’s who you were meant to be
independent of me
I'm all over the floor

Henry, you were my best friend
You’re my best friend in your stupid new clothes
Did I belong to you, did you belong to me?

We stayed up whispering I wrote you
I wrote all over you
Henry you were made for me
Born and built and broke for me
Henry you caught it all
Soaked it up and took my punches

Henry you were stony and cold
Henry you were stony and cold

Henry
what are you made of now?

What version of you leaves me
out here to die?

What did you ever do
But stand and let me ruin you
Do all of our deals still stand
Now that you’re a coward?

You watched me drunk and dribbling all over you
You watched me drunk and dribbling all over you

(Where did you put my letters? Where did you put my things?)
You coward, you beautiful baby, you're not to blame and I love you
All dressed up like I'm not gonna love you anyway
Hey hey hey
Where did you put my letters?

The key I have doesn't fit or something more deliberate
